General AI prompting and safety
Start here. Learn what AI chat tools are, how to ask them for what you need, and how to stay safe while you do it. No technical background needed.
What you’ll learn.
What AI is and is not
AI chat tools guess the most likely next words. They can be wrong and still sound sure. They only know about your work if you tell them.
Asking clearly
Say who you are, what you need, who it is for and how it should look. Give an example if you can. Ask for a draft first, then improve it.
Improving the answer
Ask follow-up questions. Ask it to make the answer shorter, simpler or friendlier. Ask where the information came from.
Checking the work
Check facts, names, numbers and dates. Read everything before you send it. You are responsible for what goes out, not the AI.
Keeping information safe
Do not put personal, health, legal or private work information into tools your workplace has not approved. Free accounts and work accounts are not the same.
Spotting AI scams
Fake voices, fake videos, fake emails and fake job ads are now easy to make. Learn the warning signs and how to check before you trust.
Everyday uses
Emails, summaries, meeting notes, plans, checklists, and turning hard documents into plain English.
You’ll leave able to
- Write clear requests that get useful answers
- Check AI work before using it
- Know what must never go into an AI tool
- Recognise AI-made scams and fakes
